Screen tearing is one of the most annoying things that can happen to someone who is trying to enjoy a game. The entire game is ruined by horizontal lines. Yes, a complete disaster.
Why does screen tearing happen in the first place? Screen tearing happens when the number of times the monitor refreshes (refresh rate) does not align with the number of images graphics card renders per second. In simpler terms, When a new image is provided to the screen while it is drawing another image, the screen processes half of one image and half of another and thereby creating a horizontal line.
We all have used V-sync to reduce the screen tearing. However, when we use a V-sync the performance drops drastically, this is because V-sync introduces a lot of input lag. Ths is why G-Sync and FreeSync came into existence.
G-sync and FreeSync are the current technologies used to prevent screen tearing. As both of these work differently, you have to decide on which technology you would prefer before purchasing gaming monitor and GPU.
To make things easier, I have listed down the advantages and disadvantages of both G-Sync as well as FreeSync. Go through them and decide on which side you want to pick!
G-Sync is a sync technology developed by Nvidia. G-sync forces the monitor’s refresh rate to match with the number of images rendered by a graphics card in a second.
Advantages of G-Sync
- G-Sync quality is ranked above FreeSync because G-Sync effectively works at low framerates as well as high frame rates. It makes it more usable in real life.
- As per Nvidia, along with smooth performance, you will also be getting benefits of 4K and HDR gaming while using G-Sync.
- G-Sync monitors do not show any ghosting effect. Ghosting effect is the trail of shadow left by an object in the last position, when it moves.
Disadvantages of G-Sync
- G-Sync monitors are very costly compared to FreeSync based monitors. This is because the manufacturers of Gsync monitors have to pay a premium to Nvidia for the hardware. There is a module in the monitor which has to adjust the refresh rate.
- G-Sync monitor connectivity is limited compared to freeSync based monitor.
FreeSync is an adaptive synchronization technology developed by AMD for a 144hz monitor IN 2015 for reducing screen tearing.
Advantages of FreeSync
- FreeSync is completely free and anyone can use it without paying a hefty premium to the developers(AMD) hence FreeSync monitors are cheaper compared to G-Sync monitors.
- FreeSync has an advantage over G-Sync in terms of connectivity.
Disadvantages of FreeSync
- FreeSync technology works like V-Sync at low framerates, creating input lag and performance issues.
- FreeSync monitors shows ghosting effect, which might not be noticeable to some users and for some other users it might be an annoying part in gaming.
G-Sync and FreeSync both have its own disadvantages and advantaged. So, when you are choosing between the two, think what is more important to you- Quality of performance or the cost-effectiveness. May the force be with you while you decide on which side you are on!
